Addressing Discipline

At SITE we strive to create an inviting, safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all to come and take part in. To do this we will need all of our staff to adhere to our disciplinary and bullying procedures and to approach all situations with a cool and level head.

For students to feel safe, they have to know that they will not be embarrassed and their dignity will be upheld even if they misbehave (they will not be shouted at, shamed in front of the class, or made an example of). Students will know, through modelling and practice, the venue rules and expectations as well as the hierarchy of consequences that will be enforced if they choose to misbehave. As coaches, we will react to misbehaviour in a consistent manner to maintain a safe and structured environment that all of our students can rely on and trust.

We need to take responsibility for our classes by striving to take an authoritative approach when managing students’ behaviour to help hold them to a high standard.

Here are some key points to focus on when addressing behavioural issues:

  • Deal with discipline in a way that minimizes disruption to the overall learning of the class
  • Consider context of misbehaviour
  • Be timely and accurate when responding to inappropriate behaviour
  • Be culturally responsive and recognize that students come from backgrounds with different norms
