Introduction

What is freestyle?

Freestyle is a widely used and extremely broad term but when applied to sports we believe it is forgetting the status quo and looking at things through a new lens. Freestyle encourages creativity, individuality, and style. Not only does it allow athletes to pursue their own personal goals within a sport, but it encourages them to make it their own and push their limits whilst realising the sport’s true potential.

What is our role as a coach?

It is our role to promote physical, psychological and social growth.

We are in a unique position where we get to teach students something they are passionate about learning; this gives us the opportunity to inspire them and have a positive impact on their lives. A lot of our students look up to us as role models, this is why we must strive to be the best we can and set a great example for all.

Ethical responsibilities of a coach

  • To be fair, considerate and honest with athletes and remember people come from a variety of backgrounds and cultural norms.
  • Encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle – discourage smoking and drinking alcohol while encouraging a healthy diet.
  • Display high standards in your language, manner, punctuality, preparation and presentation, whilst also holding students accountable to theirs.
  • Refrain from criticism of students and coaches – aim to build people up instead of putting them down.
